Department of Justice, NSW
The redevelopment of the Wagga Wagga Courthouse provides additional courtrooms; a new integrated registry office and improvements to security and building services across the complex.
Retaining the principal entry of the courthouse through the iconic courtyard on Fitzmaurice Street, the design responds to the character and physical form of the original building. Through the use of a combination of smooth faced and textured precast concrete panels, coupled with a strategic use of applied metal blades and detailing, the new building has a richness of texture that acknowledges the character of the 1903 building. A significant design strategy has been the use of single storey pavilion elements on Fitzmaurice Street which are an interpretation of the strong roofscape of the original building.
This project has delivered improvement to the provision of justice in regional NSW and presents a positive and lasting transformation of a highly significant and iconic civic building.
