- Multiple Residential
Fannie Bay Investments
The redevelopment of the former Commonwealth Bank building is a significant opportunity that will allow the heritage listed building to regain a place at the centre of Darwin life. The proposal will restore the building’s fabric and re-invigorate its spaces with new bar and restaurant uses that will activate and enliven the precinct. The restoration of the existing building will be integral to the site’s new multi-purpose role.
The bulk of the new tower is set back over 10 metres from the rear wall of the 1940 portion of the Building. The profile of the 1940 Bank will remain prominent on the corner of Smith and Bennett Streets. A new 2 storey glazed lobby and the adjacent outdoor terrace will provide new entry and allow the existing building be clearly defined yet linked to the new building. Externally the new building takes cues from the strong functionalist language and silhouette of the former bank building with its bold rectilinear forms and projecting concrete sun-blades. The two storey street-front base of the new building with its projecting horizontal awnings is designed to relate to the scale and form of the adjacent existing building.
