Charles Sturt University’s Ecologically Sustainable Design (ESD) campus showcases environmentally-responsive building techniques, passive heating and cooling. The Learning and Teaching Hub in Building 754 was originally designed with an efficient low energy air-conditioning system. The design challenge was to re-design the learning spaces to support the University’s Learning and Teaching practices without affecting internal air-handling. Colour-blocking provided distinct zones within the collaborative spaces and allowed furniture to be quickly reorganised at the conclusion of the day. Sound-absorbing panelling, furnishings and ceilings allowed group study and quiet concentration. Stand-up tables and flexible settings allow students to work individually or collaborate to suit their needs.
